Due to the lack of employment, many have little to no resources for income. The strong regional economy would allow for stable jobs to be available. However, the strong regional economy would not have much aid for racial segregation. Johnson explains, the barrier between a poor white and a poor black. Johnson states that it is more likely for a white low income family to live in a mixed income neighborhood than it is for an African American low income family (10).
Social location is a self-identify term, which refers to an individual’s status in the society. People are socially constructed into a number of relationships within our family, school, church, and working place. Social location includes race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, age, education, and political stance. I found that Black Life Matters relates to my social location. Even though I 'm a young Asian guy, my political stance is the same as those black people that is being a minority in this white-norm society.

In the reading, Fences, and Neighbors: Segregation in the 21st-century America it is stated, “...segregation restricts access to jobs and to quality schools by concentrating African Americans and Hispanics in central cities, when job growth and better schools are found in the Suburbs” (Farley & Squires, 2005). This statement resonates with Starr’s situation as she had to seek different schools for a better education that was not accessible to her from her poor neighborhood. Additionally, Starr’s housing/school situations demonstrate other less represented consequences from housing segregation such as Starr having difficulty with her black identity, she can’t be a teen from Garden Heights at her new school, Williamson, and can’t act like a Williamson at Garden Heights this concept only causes Starr to distance herself from others at the party and causes her to ponder her
One example of institutionalized racism that was demonstrated in 13th is the mass incarcerations of minorities. I think it is a problem not only because there is a disproportionate amount of minorities but also because people do not realize this is happening. It is institutionalized racism because after being in prison these minorities cannot vote or get a job and therefore puts them at a disadvantage. I think getting people to realize this problem is the first step to address it but I am not sure what should happen next.
Unfortunately, this does not account for institutionalized racism, unequal access to education and services, and a system that perpetuates a growing divide between the rich and the poor. In McKinnon’s article he argues that our location of birth has an affect of how we are born: poor, rich, or middle class, “The reality is that where you’re born matters tremendously. where you start in life, unfortunately, has a huge impact on where you’ll end up. Think about it. A zip code is not just a number, it represents everything inside of that area – including the hospital in which you are born, the schools where you attend, the streets on which you will play, the stores and restaurants that will feed you, and the jobs to which your parents and eventually you might have access.”
Institutional discrimination focusses on the mistreatment of a larger group of people such as minorities, while individual discrimination focuses on the mistreatment of a single person. I think institutional discrimination is a more serious social issue because for the obvious reason that it affects more people, and also affects the logistics of society on a larger scale, for example, institutional discrimination has affected African-American home buyers. Statistics show that if you are African-American you are sixty percent less likely to get approved for a home loan, not only is their approval chance less but if they do get approved statistics show that their loan interest rates are also higher than that of white people. They weren 't served at restaurants and were to sit at the end of a bus. Some Jim Crow laws were that they sat at the end of buses and have different rooms.
The Jim Crow Laws were state-level legal codes of segregation against the blacks in the South. After the Federal government removed troops from the last of the Southern states, effectively ending Southern Reconstruction for good, there were no longer any barriers against the Southern whites foul treatment against the freed black men. In Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court backed South's segregationist social order by claiming that is was Constitutional to segregate the blacks with "separate but equal" facilities. The only problem was, the blacks weren't given equal conditions. The schools for their children were of a terribly poor standard.
They argue that institutional racism in the housing market enacted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), private loan and real estate institutions and actors, and white residents effectively and permanently isolated African Americans. Institutionalized racist practices of the housing market such as redlining and steering, coupled with white flight and structural disinvestment in African American neighborhoods, effectively isolated African Americans and further contributed to the creation of black ghettos. Thus, residential segregation concentrates poverty, erodes institutional and economic support, and ultimately causes its residents to normalize their problematic social environment of high levels of joblessness, teenage pregnancy, drugs, and violence. If the segregation of African Americans were to be resolved by their economic achievement and class mobility, middle-class African Americans should be able to enter white neighborhoods of comparable income levels.
