Epic Hero A deceased, decorated mythologist, author, and lecturer named Joseph John Campbell once said, "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." A hero doesn't always have special powers or magical capabilities like you may think. You could walk by a hero every day of your life and could never know. In the film, A Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, an example of an epic hero is the protagonist, Westly because he put others before himself, went through the hell-like journey of a hero, and went through events that changed him forever. First, Westly is a hero because he put others before himself.
Heroes are defined by many characteristics and experiences. Traits such as courage and selflessness, or the adventure he embarks on could show that one is a true hero. Rob Reiner’s movie “The Princess Bride” contains characters which possess qualities that are of an archetypal hero, such as Inigo Montoya. After his father’s brutal murder by the six-fingered man, Inigo spends his life searching for his killer so he may bring his father’s spirit to rest. Inigo Montoya’s experience with common archetypes, his quest along the Hero’s Journey, and the heroic qualities he possesses aids in portraying him as an archetypal hero.

There are three main ideas that every American takes pride in, which is their country, freedom, and military. Americans holds their heads high when it comes to its military. From the Army, to the Marines, to the Navy Seals, and all the other branches of military, Americans are both proud and fully supportive of its troops. Sadly, that pride was shaken on April 22, 2004 when famous NFL player and former Army Ranger, Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan over friendly fire. After Tillman’s death, the Army tried several time to cover up Pat’s actual cause of death to try and use him for propaganda recruitment purposes.
Joseph Campbell’s theories about “The Hero’s Journey” can be seen in many pieces of literature including mythological and superhero stories, such as in the movie Spider Man (2002) and in the book Theseus by Plutarch. Spider Man, a well-known and loved modern hero, follows almost every step of the “hero’s journey” exactly how Campbell intended for them to. The Ancient Western hero, Theseus, is also another great hero that follows Campbell’s steps closely. Spider Man, Theseus, and Campbell’s steps share many similarities, such as the “Call to Adventure,” “Crossing the Threshold,” and the “Road of Trials.” Theseus and Spider Man, in my opinion, are two exemplary models of heroes that most accurately represent Joseph Campbell’s steps of “The Hero’s
Everyone has heard a good hero story, because they are everywhere, in the media, in history, and in even with each other. Tales of action and adventures have been around since humans have known how to tell stories, but every story has a similar journey that they embark on. The tale of the hero has many variations, but they each follow the same basic pattern that Joseph Campbell describes in his book A Hero with a Thousand Faces. Some stories only follow the basic outline of a hero, and others can be traced along the route exactly. An example that follows the outline exactly is The NeverEnding Story (1984) which is a movie based on a German book by Michael Ende.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.

Most of us just think,”should I go to Starbucks or Sonic?” Have you ever had a loved one in the military .I have a lot of relatives who did fight in the military,think of all those soldiers dying and risking their lives for strangers. In the United States, serving in the military is seen as a model of true patriotism, and rightfully so. Service members train for 10 weeks in their transition from civilian to a soldier. They train to be able to endure all the hardships that may come their way. Service members have to be in the best physical shape to serve and because of all that they do, they are thought of as brave and selfless people. Service members make extreme sacrifices to defend our country and act selflessly by doing so; it is fitting that they are seen as heroes by many Americans.
In America, we pride ourselves to be the best in everything we do. Such as our school systems, advance technological breakthroughs and helping people around the world. Yet people around the world knows us best for our military strength. As Americans, we have prided ourselves for taking care of our military members. We build memorials, have parades and holidays just for our troops.
