African-American privilege is a term not often heard because it simply does not exist whereas as the term white privilege does exist. Being African-American in the United States of America has been difficult from the beginning of time when they first landed in the country. African-Americans began their journey in America as slaves when they were violently removed from their own country known as Africa. Since the 1600’s till the 1800’s African Americans were mainly known to be born a slave and to die as a slave. It was rare for an African-American to be free and do what they pleased. There have been many movements that African-Americans have created in order to fight for their freedom and end the judgement by their ascribed status. One movement that is widely known to be one of the most aggressive movements that African-Americans have created was known as the Nat Turner rebellion which was created by Nat Turner himself. It dealt with murdering white slave owners in order to stop slavery. Another movement that African-Americans created is a movement called “Black Lives Matter”. The Black Lives Matter movement is a more peaceful movement in order to change the way that our society looks at African-Americans. It deals mostly with how targeted African-Americans are by law enforcements and vigilantes. The Nat Turner rebellion and Black Lives Matter movement are two completely different kinds of movements as one took a violent route and the other a gentler route. Both have the same concept and message to let African-Americans be free and live a life without being oppressed. In order to explain who Nat Turner was, the information I will present will be a summary of the reading we did in class titled The Confessions Of Nat Turner. Nat Turner was born into slavery in 1800 in Southampton Country, Virginia. Nat Turner was taught how to read and write, not by his slave master, but by his parents. Nat Turner called himself a Christian and considered himself a prophet of Jesus Christ. Nat Turner was a slave who was not treated respectfully at all which was a common relationship between a slave and slave owner. What Nat Turner created was seen as a massacre when he started the Nat Turner rebellion but to him it was a gift from God behind the reasons of his actions. Nat Turner took a different approach to Christianity. The reason for Nat Turner creating this rebellion group was because of his statement “I am convinced that I have been chosen by God to lead his people to freedom.” His state of mind was that he was sent by God to kill all the white slave owners. This could certainly be seen as violent karma for the white slave owners or even payback for the life he was living and the lives of other African-American slaves. A life filled with cruel experiences like beatings and torture committed by slave masters and other white people who were involved. This is what made him fight back and defend himself and other people who suffered
