Significance Of the Title Nathen Farnum To bluff is to mislead someone by presenting a bold, strong, or self-confident front. In Gail Helgason's short story "Bluffing" Liam and Gabriella mislead each other by hiding their true intentions behind a front, giving significance to the title. With this in mind, Liam's ability to create a front through his bluffs is visible through his actions. Living, an ability that Liam has, comes naturally to him. As a result, he was able to create a lie " his voice thick with sympathy"(2) allowing his bluff to be seen as believable and sympathetic. In short, Liam has a good grasp on these two aspects to prove he can and has lied, making his bluffs very believable. As well as Liam, Gabriella is also very knowledgeable on how to bluff, she shows her ability to bluff throughout the story. In fact, Gabriella had shown Liam how to bluff him. Furthermore, she ended up reminding Liam to " Bluff him"(4) when Liam walked towards Gabriella unknowing there was a bear a few feet away from her. Alongside Gabriella's ability to teach someone how to bluff, she also knows how to bluff others. For instance, her ability to bluff others while hiding behind a front is shown by, "[stretching] her lips into a smile….She still has that much bluffing left in her"(5). Furthermore as a reflection of both Liam and Gabriella show that they withhold information from each other meaning they both have strong front and bluffs, in addition, it shows they don't fully trust each other. Liam showed he his front might not be as strong by "[staying] in the lead at"(1) during their hike. In other words, Liam was putting distance between himself and Gabriella to avoid conversation till they reached the lake. While at the lake Liam says " to celebrate" followed
