William H. Armstrong wrote an interesting book that was made into an equally inspiring movie. Sound tells a story that a dog that lives with a story that treats him more than just a pet. The book and the movie have a lot of interesting similarities and differences. The differences outnumber the similarities.
Bass Reeves was the first African American commissioned to serve as a deputy marshal west of the Mississippi River. Born a slave in Paris, Texas and owned by George Reeves, Bass Reeves grew up illiterate and remained illiterate for his entire life. When the Civil War began, George Reeves, Bass’ owner, joined the Confederate Army, taking Bass with him. It is unclear how and exactly when Bass Reeves left his owner but at some point during the Civil War he gained his freedom.
The book Sounder by William H. Armstrong states “ ‘Poor creature. Poor creature,’ said the mother and turned away to get him some food,” reveals a change in her attitude toward Sounder. The night Sounder whimpered and eagerly pawed at the door, he had many gashes, broken bones and had a skeleton like body. The mother’s heart ached for this poor creature. Harrison Bergeron vs. Anthem To live in a world where collectivism is a part of society it must be strange to the way we live now. In both dystopian novels everyone has the same rights and is equal which makes them practice collectivism. Throughout both novels they show their separate in relationship and figure out what relationships truly are and overcome the fear of their government discovering them. In Vonnegut’s “ Harrison Bergeron” and Rand’s “Anthem” their societies are the similar in equality but different in their relationships. Both novels show the characteristics that they are exactly equal because collectivism is practiced upon society by the close minded government. .
In “The Portable Phonograph,” Walter Van Tilburg Clark uses of setting is used to describe and captivate the depth of the new world that Dr, Jenner must experience. Setting in “The Portable Phonograph” is crucial to understand the characters and their actions because the audience will have to understand that the environment that the individuals are placed in are what causes them to act the way that they do. Many of Dr. Jenkins attitudes towards his guest during the post- apocalyptic time period can be connected to the atmosphere, the cave, and to Dr. Jenkins bedroom. The Portable Phonograph by Walter Van Tilburg Clark is a short story about a group of men who, after the nuclear war, try to survive in the post-apocalyptic world. Clark starts his short story by describing the mood of this post-apocalyptic atmosphere, and the effect of the nuclear war. After the author introduces the mood of the story, Clark goes into detail on how these four men live and what they do on a weekly basis. Clark illustrates that people who survived this nuclear war, which almost wiped out the human race, moreover destroy the planet, are not able to survive the post-apocalyptic world and how the human race is about to become extinct.
