Ever read a book and heard about a character that is not the main character but plays the biggest role? Well meet Bobby Moch, He is the coxswain on the rowing team at the University of Washington. The author wrote the book about another boy in the boat, but he still proved the importance of Bobby Moch. Daniel James Brown portrays Bobby Moch perseverance to show that in tough times there is always a path to victory. In this book, Bobby stays with his plans even if it means he has to lie to his teammates and disobey the coach. He agreed with Al Ulbrickson (coach) on a plan to victory. Until you lose sight of whats important. Bobby always stayed strong and believed in himself and his crew but, “Bobby Moch never heard him, never saw the flag… The Husky Clipper, for a horrific moment, sat motionless at the line dead in the water.” (p-341) Not sure of what to do he did what came to in stink. Bobby needed to start fibbing. “...glanced up at the huge black-and-white “Ziel” sign at the finish. He began calculating just what he needed to get out of the boys to make sure he got there ahead of the boats off to his left. It was time to start lying.” (p-348) though lying is not the best thing to do when you're caught in a tight spot Bobby did it anyway to keep the spirit of the boys up and running. The crowd began to roar and yell at the many different teams in the race. Germany ranting for Germany, California screaming in joy for there team. And then “ The sound of it cascaded down on them, reverberated from one shore to the other, and utterly drowned out Bobby Mochs voice. Even Don Hume, sitting just eighteen inches in front of him, couldn’t make out what Moch was shouting.” (p-349) Everything stopped for a minute, no one knew what was going on but Bobby knew what he needed to do. He needed to get through the guy's heads without talking. “ He grabbed the wooden knockers on the tiller lines and began to bang them against the ironbark knocker-boards fastened to either side of the hull. Even if the boys couldn’t hear it maybe they would feel the vibrations.” (p-349) Bobby had faith in what he was doing her persevered and pushed through to victory. The boys felt the vibrations and picked up the pace to win! He made it through the toughest situation by communicating to the boys in a way no one could think
