UNIT 1 Exploration of a theme: Body Image
In unit 1, We explored the theme of body image by identifying and applying the different drama strategies we studied. This helped us portray our evaluation of the theme further throughout.
The bittersweet effects of body shaming were displayed by our class using 5 different freeze frames. In groups of 6, we decided on a stereotypical setting where the bully bullies the victim. We acknowledged Ali to play the victim as he was sound at portraying negative body imagery by slouching down and frowning. Here, Aya exposes insignificant consideration and opinionated judgement based on appearances. This was evident in the freeze frame as the students present in the classroom Sarah and I were being situated further away from Ali whereas Kai was the only student who stood adjacent to Ali consequently representing his concern and support towards Ali. While the girls were talking behind Ali’s back in the right centre of the stage, Ali was weeping and Kai was comforting in the left centre of the stage distinctly portraying the outcome of Aya’s inconsiderate words. The link between Aya and Ali’s words such as when Aya says “He is too slim to do anything” Ali then says “Am I too thin to play football”, helped us evaluate the contrast of conformity in words used by opposing characters. The irony of a female teacher shaming Ali helped us strongly portray the growing controversy of body shaming through a male’s perspective breaking the social norm that only girls are exclusively affected in body shaming problems. The use of tiny words and misleading comments through Aya’s teacher character also developed an understanding of how it’s damaging others
