“One out of every five students report being bullied’’.This fact from the National bullying prevention center shows that a lot of kids are being bullied. In Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl faces three types of bullying but one event has a major impact on Stargirl and through these events, we are shown Spinelli's opinions and ideas on bullies.
Emotional bullying is shown throughout Stargirl as she gets bullied by her classmates and school members. After the basketball team loses, the whole school blames the loss on Stargirl. Her classmates would give her the silent treatment and “no one spoke to [them] no one nodded to [them]. No one smiled at [them] no one looked at [them]” (Spinelli 160). This was an example of emotional bullying. It shows me that the students at MICA started to ignore Stargirl and not talk to her. This was one of the types of bullying shown at Mica highschool. Emotional bullying is not the only type of bullying shown at Mica high school; many students also use verbal bullying to hurt Stargirl. Spinelli views bullying as a negative and hurtful force that could seriously affect someone. We are shown this in Stargirl when Stargirl gets bullied and Leo finds out Stargirl is sad when he “ducked into her room to check out her happy wagon. There were only two stones in it” (Spinelli 143). This quote shows that according to Spinelli, bullying can cause a person to lose their happiness and have only two stones in their happy wagon.
