“Peer pressure is pressure you put on yourself to fit in!” Jeff Moore once said. In Jerry Sninelli’s novel Stargirl, Leo is peer pressured into not dating the girl he likes because she is different than everyone else. In Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, a girl who has been homeschooled goes to Mica Highschool her tenth grade year. She catches a boy named Leo’s eyes, and he likes her. He gets peer pressured into not dating her because she is different than everyone else. At the end of the book, Stargirl leaves and no one but Archie knows where she went. This shows how judgemental people are and why some people feel like they don't belong because they are not like everyone else.This is a good example that social pressure is a problem in high schools today. Second,the reader sees peer pressure when people start to question how long a star girl will last at Mica High school. Kevin speaks to Leo about Stargirl and how long she will last at Mica High School. “‘How long do you think somebody who’s like that is going to last around here?”’ (Spinelli 7). This shows that as soon as Stargirl walked into the school, people started to talk about her. As people question how long she will last, Stargirl doesn't care that people are talking about her behind her back. Lastly, the reader sees judgment when people are describing Stargirl and using words like unusual, interesting, and different, and that's not a bad thing. Leo is narrating what some of the parents lining the walk into the school dance said about her. “‘Beautiful.”’ “‘Unusual.”’ “‘Interesting.”’ “‘Different.”’ “‘Regal.”’ “These words will come later from the parents lining the walk.
