The dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been a controversial topic since the events occurred in August of 1945. There were many reasons why the United States made the decision to use the atomic bomb to end the war with Japan. While there were several other options the United States could have opted for, President Truman and his committee chose the plan that would save as many American lives as possible. The driving factor that led to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the race of discovery of harnessing the great power that is the atomic bomb, which included the United States and Great Britain against Germany. Whoever was successful first would have a shockingly strong power over the world. The United States and Great Britain managed to make the amazing discovery before the Germans, which was not only a time for rejoicing but also a time of great contemplation. First, many argued that the United States could have modified the unconditional surrender terms of the Japanese, allowing the Japanese to remain an imperial dynasty with a ruling emperor. This option was too time consuming and without much hope due to the fierceness of the Japanese. Second, some say the United States could have delayed the bombings until Stalin’s three-month agreement to wage war was overdue on August 8, however, the Japanese did not show any intent to make a move or surrender after President Truman’s many attempts to persuade them into surrendering. Finally, many argue that the United States could have defeated the Japanese by isolation, blockading, and bombarding, which would have not only cost several hundred thousand American lives but also added on an even higher financial cost spent on this
