In “Trauma Theory Abbreviated,” Bloom explains, “...if a person is subjected to a sufficient number of experiences teaching him or her that nothing they do will affect the outcome, people give up trying” (Bloom 4). Glen forcing Bone to move from place to place is yet another thing that she does not have control over. As Bone describes this never ending migration, she says, “We moved and then moved again. We lived in no one house more than eight months” (64). By moving from house to house, this leaves Bone devoid of a sense of where she comes from.

The White Bone is a fantasy-fiction novel by Barbara Gowdy, which follows the story of an adopted elephant cow, Mud, and her family as they try to find the fabled “Safe Place,” a region free from drought and elephant poachers. Mud, who had recently earned her cow name, She-Spurns, finds that she has visionary powers, which grant her the ability to occasionally see glimpses of the near future. Soon after this discovery, she receives a vision of another elephant herd; “All the faces are hacked off, the trunks tossed aside, the tusks gone and some of the feet as well… So these are the She-D’s. Twenty-three bodies she counts before her eye dims” (Gowdy, 42).
Bone may seem like a reckless teenager to many at the beginning, but, in actuality, is the product of his parents mistakes. Falling victim to an alcoholic mother and abusive stepfather drives Bone to act out. His father addresses his failed parenting by saying, “the kid doesn 't know right from wrong”(21). Without parental guidance Bone begins to get into trouble and eventually decides to move out of his parents apartment and into a new one with his friend Russ alongside a motorcycle gang. After his parents confront Bone about the situation at hand, Bone refuses to move back in after realizing that “They would’ve let me come back if I’d wanted but only if I could be a different person than I was which was not only impossible but unfair”(18).
