Entry: Bonito Mussolini (1883-1945)
Bonito Mussolini was known as an activist, journalist, Prime minster, and most notably as a dictator and the leader of The National Fascist Party of Italy. Mussolini was born into a working class family in Forli located in northern Italy. His father was a blacksmith and a passionate socialist and his mother was an elementary school teacher. He was considered to be a sharp and an intelligent young boy, but was very aggressive, violent, and had a growing ego. He was difficult to discipline at his village school and was sent to boarding schools, but it proved ineffective as he was expelled numerous times from different schools. He believed revolution was necessary and should be pursued by the people at any cost. He returned to Italy in 1904, joined the military and became even more politically active and driven than ever. Bonito was appointed as the editor of the party’s newspaper at the age of 29 and brought a new found excitement to the socialist party. After Mussolini’s tenure as the editor of the newspaper “Avanti”, he changed his positions on the supporting the countries involvement in the war and spoke out against it saying that it hinders the survival and prosperity of liberty in Europe. Bonito was therefore expelled by the socialist party and founded his own paper called Popolo d’Italia. He writing was anti-military and promoted the restoration of the bourgeois state instead of its destruction. Mussolini reversed and brought forth new movements which would evolve later into the fascist revolution. His movements did not gain enough traction for support to build platform for several years and defeated in the parliamentary election of 1919.
