“False accusations are of particular interest to skeptics because skepticism has often been at the forefront of giving voice to the wrongly accused” (Radford). Skeptical claims have been recognized and allows the public to ask for strong evidence to support their claims. It is not right to falsely accuse a person of a crime they did not commit, but it still happens today. There are many examples of false accusations made on innocent people, that turn out getting the accuser in trouble instead.

These people who let fear get to them often do not want someone to find out what they did, what they caused, and who they hurt. People will go to great lengths to cover up something they did by blaming another person for all of it. An example of fear would be the trial in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. The example is when Mayella Ewell sent Tom Robinson to court for supposedly raping her. In the trial Mayella explains how everything happened and how her father found them. She claimed that after a party with her friend, this man held a knife to her throat and forced her into the car. After police investigated her claim, they found clear evidence that she made it up. She was willing to send him to prison for a felony to keep from her mother that she was having consensual intercourse with this man. The issue was that her mother found pictures of Robin and the man together on her phone, and she decided it was a better option to lie and hurt him instead of getting in trouble herself. This is a clear example of how fear tied into falsely accusing someone. Radford had explained that Robin was afraid of what her grandmother would have thought if she knew the truth. This case made it easy for the officers to find out that her accusation was false, but it also provides an example of how easy it is to make a claim, and how hard it can be to disprove it. There is only one appropriate circumstance in which an accusation of sexual assault is appropriate, and that is when an actual case of sexual assault happened. Inappropriate circumstances would be, a way to get back at someone you're upset with for other reasons, and a way to cover up risque photos that were found by a family member like Robin did.
