Journal #5 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 376. This book is about a girl named Scout who lives with brother Jem, aunt Alexandra, and father Atticus. The kids have learned a lot from the experiences with people in the town like Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. When Tom died it affects the whole town for a little bit. When the kids were attacked by Bob Ewell, but Boo Radley came to save them.
In the beginning of the book, Jem has a prejudice against Arthur/Boo Radley. Jem and his friend Dill, would make up stories about Boo eating cats, stabbing people with scissors and being a “monster” even though they have never met him before. In chapter 7, Jem goes into Arthur Radley’s backyard to spy on him, but then losses his pants. When he goes back later to retrieve his breeches, they are folded over the fence. Jem thinks that Boo left them for him because they were sewn together “all crooked.”
“The only thing to fear is fear itself.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Fear is a commonly confused emotion. Everyone’s response to fear varies. People may pass off fear as other things such as stress, anxiety, and in some cases laughter.
“You can’t judge an album by a single sing; It’s like judging a book by only reading a single chapter” (Robin, Trevor). To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that took place in the 1930’s in the south. The story is narrated in the eyes of a young girl named Scout Finch. She lives in Maycomb Alabama, with her brother Jem and her father Atticus. Scout has a friend named Dill and the three of them get in a lot of trouble throughout the book.
Is fear the only thing to fear? Maybe it is, maybe it is not. Fear is a strong emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Some people use fear to control the people around them. Someone that uses fear to control others is called a demagogue.
There was nowhere to run, Nowhere to escape. I was a prisoner locked up in jail. A prisoner who will stay in jail forever never knowing how the outside looks or how it feels to be outside . I was nonexistent to everyone around Maycomb. I was a ghost.
People need not fear the unknown if they are capable of achieving what they need and want." (73) This quote highlights that fear can hinder people from reaching their full potential, preventing them from making progress and reaching their full potential.. Don’t let fear become an obstacle; if you are capable, you will reach your goal. "We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand."
The description of the Radley house comes off as scary and creepy to the kids at first. Until they realize that Boo Radley is a really nice person. And that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Just because the house looked scary on the outside doesn’t mean that the people that live on the inside are mean and evil, or whatever come to think that they are. This contributed to the saying earlier in the book where it said: “You never know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.”
Rumors swept through the town, ruining a man’s reputation and giving him no reason to step outside of his own home. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Arthur “Boo” Radley is the most complex of Maycomb’s residents. Many say Boo is a killer that should not be trusted near children. However, Scout thinks otherwise as she tries to understand Boo herself. She learns more than she figured, as Boo teaches her numerous lessons without even meeting her.
A month before his death, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s teaches the gospel of Saint Mark to the people in the Ebenezer Baptist Church. In order to teach this King explains how the drum major instinct can be perverted, or used in a positive way, in hopes to teach a lesson to his congregation. The story of James and John tells about how the two men asks Jesus to grant them a coming king of Israel who would set Jerusalem free. In the story Jesus replies to the two men saying, “Can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
“Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks, he dined on raw squirrels and any rats he could catch, that’s why his hands were blood stained.” Boo Radley shows up very little in the book and most of the time it is what people infer about him. People know very little about Boo but we know he is childish, caring and reserved. Boo did or had things put upon him that made him childish.
It's so dark and dirty under here, I'm so hungry I haven't eaten for hours. I'm currently hiding under Scout's bed, I just run away from my home in Mississippi. I don't ever want to go back, I just want to live with my aunt here, so I'll see Jem and Scout. I felt like such an outsider when I first came to Maycomb for the summer before I first met Jem and Scout. They made me feel so welcomed and wanted to hang out with me.
The novel To Kill A Mockingbird is compiled of thirty captivating chapters. There are many events that occur throughout these thirty chapters, and many relationships between the characters change. One such relationship is the one between Arthur, or Boo, Radley and Jem and Scout Finch. Although Boo only came out of his house once in the novel, his relationship with the Finch children was seemingly the most dynamic one in this novel. Ten-year-old Jem and six-year-old Scout naturally believed almost everything they heard, which is why they believed the horror stories about Boo and the rest of the Radley family that they heard from Miss Stephanie Crawford, the town gossip.
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”, this quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt depicts how dangerous fear truly is. By saying this, he understands the drastic effect fear can have. Even today, ISIS is using fear as one of their primary weapons. Fear can force people to undergo such actions that they would have never even imagined in their wildest dreams. This is a crippling feeling that none are truly immune to.
Arthur Radley (Boo) from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a young man, living in Maycomb, Alabama, who is portrayed much differently to what he really is. Arthur is very reclusive, and has minimal interactions with others in his community. Boo Radley is also misunderstood, being unable to show who he really is in the community. He is also a very mysterious character in the book whose character is portrayed differently as people know Arthur as someone in their community that is dangerous and occasionally violent. First of all, being very reclusive could be a trait related to Arthur Radley.
