David is a young London boy during the time of the England war, while also going through his own personal life war. David is also losing his mother to an unknown illness. Davids mother was fascinated with fairy tales which intrigued David. During World War Two a lot of the books that kids read were probably fairy tales to take their minds off of what's happening in the world around them. During this time of World War Two there are lots of tensions between countries. While in comparison David is having a his own war with battling Rose, Goregie, his dad, and everything that happens in the land Elsewhere. Between the two worlds, they have a lot of similarities that are affected by the time of the novel. The Book Of Lost Things shows how the England war time affects how david saw the real world and Elsewhere world.
In the Beginning, David is well aware of what is happening during the war. “In London, people were taking items from crashed German planes as souvenirs, even though nobody was supposed to approach the wrecks, and Nazi pilots who bailed out provided regular excitement for the citizenry. Here, even though they were barely fifty miles from London, it was all very sedate” (57,58). He is more focused on coping his mother's death and disapproving of his father's remarriage. “The windows were heavily barred, and great nails had been driven through the door from the inside, so that to fall heavily against it would be to risk instant impalement. This was not a cottage: this was a fortress… wearing clothing, mostly tattered jackets and torn trousers” (89,90). This description gives readers an idea of how the war in the real world and this other world are. The people in the military or citizens who live around the war probably did not have a lot of money for clothes, and people could not tell if they were walking on safe ground or a battle
