Jack O’Reilly 7/27/15 Fahrenheit 451 Characters Gus Montag- a 30 year old man who is the protagonist of the story, a fireman whose job is to burn books. Then realizes what he's missing out on and begins to find the meaning of what’s inside the books. Gus Montag has black hair, and is about 30 years old. After meeting Clarisse McClellan he finds her outlook on refreshing. After the burning of an old women, Gus Montag develops a strong hate for his job and goes against it. (Page 34) “He dropped the book. Immediately, another fell into his arms. Montag's hand closed like a mouth, crushed the book with wild devotion, with insanity of mindlessness to his chest.” Clarisse McClellan- she is a 17 year old women, who is Gus’s neighbor. She is characterized as a beautiful women. She is also very curious and asks many questions. Her uncle is her role model, who characterizes her as crazy. (Page 5, Clarisse) “ I’m seventeen and crazy. My uncle says the two always go together.” Captain Beatty- he is the captain of the fire department that Gus works at.. He believes that books have ideas that are a threat to the government. He can be very demanding at times and hates book and people who secretly hold books (Page 35, Beatty) “ You know the law. Where’s your common sense? Captain Beatty had been spiralling out of control as of late. Captain Beatty, who wanted to die, was talking to Gus about how dangerous books are and why would he keep the books. Gus was holding a flame thrower the whole time and Captain Beatty continued to threaten him. Then, Captain Beatty hits Gus, which causes Gus pulls out the flame thrower. Beatty demands him to turn over the weapon. Gus refuses and then burns Captain Beatty to death. Captain Beatty didn’t fight back but accepted his death with the flamethrower which also burned all of the
