The book Hatchet created by Gary Paulsen is a novel about a thirteen year old boy who was on a plane which crashed in the middle of nowhere. It is also about survival, surviving in an unfamiliar environment, adapting to a new home, and utilizing the resources that are all around you. At the beginning of the book, Bryan's parents were divorced and he went to meet his father for the first time after the divorce. The pilot was having a major heart attack when he was flying the airplane. The plane flying 30,000 feet in the air without a pilot is real trouble. He knew he was not going to be found for a while so he builds himself a shelter; he already was supplied with a food and a water source. In the middle of the book, Bryan finds a survival pack in the airplane which had a lot of useful stuff. It had like sleeping bag, a foam sleeping pad, a cook set, matches, lighters, a knife, a compass, a first-aid kit, a cap, and a fishing kit. He also found a rifle, but he thought that it would separate him from nature. With all of this stuff Bryan could survive in the middle of nowhere with food, water and shelter. Bryan has found an emergency transmitter, but he later noticed that it broke during the crash. Bryan's shelter was ruined during a storm, but that helped Bryan think twice about where to build his shelter. ` At the end of the book, Bryan was rescued, but he was not that relived about it, he has been staying in this area since he crashed. He slept, ate and drank water here. When the pilot came down Bryan said '' Hi my name is Brian Robinson … would you like some food.
