Reading The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton was absolutely amazing, enjoyable, and somewhat relatable. It is definitely my most favorite book of all time! The Outsiders made me feel as if I was living through the characters and as soon as I reached the end of a page I immediately turned to the next and eagerly read, wanting to grasp every little detail I possibly could. I was able to relate to the characters not so much in the sense of crime or violence, but in the sense of feeling belittled by others who thought they werelocation. I presume that S.E Hinton intended for it to be in Tulsa, Oklahoma due to the fact in the FAQ’s she explains how growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma during her high school years is related to this novel. The location was not of as much importance as the time period, because there were only greasers and Socs during the 1950s-1960s, so it is vital that it take place in that specific time period.

Ponyboy has a philosophy about sticking together since he and his group of friends were more like a family than a “gang”. An act of loyalty was when their parents passed away and Darry worked a full-time job to support his younger brothers instead of going to college. Johnny 's friendship and loyalty toward Ponyboy seem to escalate too far when he kills a Soc, who started to drown Ponyboy after threatening them with a switchblade.
