b) Setting: The Outsiders takes place in the 1960’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I know that this book takes place in the 1960’s because of some of the terms said in the story. First, I originally thought this book was in the 1960’s when I heard the name “Elvis Presley”. Elvis Presley used to be a very famous artist. His songs are still around, but are not nearly as popular they used to be. He rose to fame in the mid to late 1950’s and continued into the 1960’s. Another hint as to why this book takes place in the 60’s is because they mentioned “The Beatles”. The Beatles received their first contract in 1962, but broke up in the late 60’s. In the 1960’s, they were a very famous group. My last reason to support that The Outsiders takes place in the 60’s is because of something the Socs wore, known as madras. I know this because it says so in the back of the book. Within Tulsa, there is an Eastside and a Westside. The Greasers live on the Eastside, and the Socs live on the Westside. This location works for The Outsiders because it really shows how much the Greasers and Socs dislike one another. They are on completely different sides of the city because of their strong hatred. Also, in the story Ponyboy talks about rodeos and barrel racing. This is something that seems very original to Oklahoma because of its country, “hillbilly” roots.
