The Outsiders Since books have been created there has been many books banned or challenged for whatever reason the reader found inappropriate or detrimental. Schools all around the country have challenged or banned books, for example, a student’s parent got their hands on a book they’re reading and found it inappropriate for their son/ daughter to read and have asked the school to remove it from their library. In this case ‘The Outsiders’ has been banned in many public schools, but in 2001 ‘Eleanor’s George Washington Middle School’ banned the book due to objections to the focus on gangs, gang activities and excessive use of drugs. Author’s tend to write about things they see in their life or that have encountered once in their life. According to ‘S.E. Hinton.com’ Ms. Hinton grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a small, poor city like the one in the story. By living in a small town and most importantly the poor side, she would have the perfect first-hand reference for writing about a family and their friends living an impoverished city. Most of the characters were based on people that were around her like her family, friends, and people in school. Writing about what many call controversial is simply Ms. Hinton writing about how life was back then in her time. She spoke about how society was split into two groups which in the book were the wealthy group from the west side best know as the ‘Socials,’ and the weak group from the east side best known in the book as the ‘Greasers.’ Although the book received much criticism once it was published because it told the story of the two gangs, it soon became very popular all throughout America selling over 4 million
