Dear Mrs. Atkinson and School Board Officials, My name is Aiden Prokshi, and I am in 8th grade at Mechanicsburg Middle School. Taking into consideration that the novel “The Outsiders” was unbanned from the district libraries, students would be exposed to the horrors and violence that followed it. In “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, the author, bolsters the horrors and violence that gangs can bring along with them. I believe that our prestigious school district should ban the book, “The Outsiders” …show more content…

The text states, “In our neighborhood it's rare to find a kid who doesn't drink once in a while.” This quote conveys the fact that underage children are typically exposed to drinking alcohol in the novel. The significance of this is that the author is trying to normalize drinking in the novel, explaining that most of the children in that neighborhood have drank. Most of them already have, so it must be okay for me to do it right? The author is trying to get the reader to think that underage drinking is normal, and should be okay for them to follow suit. An opposing writer may say that the author depicting the underage drinking may be an educational opportunity, to show the risks and dangers that underage drinking brings. That may be so, but not all readers have the same level of critical thinking skills or have the same guidance from a parent or guardian. Any gullible or impressionable individual could be persuaded to normalize underage drinking after such exposure, and make considerably negative life choices as a result.
