Imagine how your social status and appearance define your life. The story of The Outsiders takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967. This interesting drama revolves around Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny, who get in trouble by killing Bob Sheldon, a Soc from their rival gang. Even though some people may think that Johnny is not guilty of killing Bob, Johnny is guilty of killing Bob because Bob didn’t do anything at the time to kill Johnny. Johnny is not completely guilty, though. He has been attacked by the same socs before, so he gets scared and kills Bob. The Socs were drowning Ponyboy and he had to do something. In the text, it says that they were going to beat him up, but they never did. Johnny attacked them first. This is why Johnny is very wrong to have killed Bob. Johnny is guilty of killing Bob. “We gotta get out of here”. Get somewhere to go. Run away.”(Hinton, 50) If Johnny was not guilty then he should have gone to the Police and told them about the incident, but he didn’t. He went to Dally and got money and a gun, then went to a church to hide from the police. “Johnny, who was the most law-abiding of us, now carries a six-inch switchblade. He’d use it too.”(Hinton, 31) Johnny intentionally carried a blade to kill the next person who jumped at him. This is why Johnny is guilty of killing Bob. This is the life of someone, defined by their social status and appearance. The life of Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis. Even though some people may think that Johnny is not guilty of killing Bob, Johnny is guilty of killing Bob because Bob didn’t do anything to harm him at the time.
