The theme is developed through Johnny stabbing Bob because Bob was drowning Ponyboy in the big water fountain. In the story Ponyboy was cussing out the socs, and the socs attacked Ponyboy. On page 56 Ponyboy says— ‘“They grabbed my arm and twisted it behind my back and shoved my face in the fountain, the next thing I knew, I was laying on the pavement floor’” and on page 56 Johnny says ‘“I killed him I killed that boy’”. This demonstrates the importance of violence, because Bob dies and Ponyboy gets injured. If Ponyboy didn’t start cussing the socs out, then Bob wouldn’t have been dead. Police were already after him because Dally robbed a store. On page 152 Ponyboy says ‘“ Dally is gone, he ran out like the devil was after him”’. And on page 154 it says, “Dally raised the gun, they don’t know that your bluffin and the police men’s guns spit fire into the night’”. This is important to the book because someone they cared about the most died. This demonstrates the importance of losing someone you cared about the most, because somebody died who was in their gang and they cared about a lot. This impacts the story because Dallas wasn’t just a gang member, he was one of their best good friends, and he dies right in front of Ponyboy eyes.
