The fire was fierce and were guided by the little kids screaming and coughing for help. Several of Ponyboy’s traits differed from the beginning due to environmental crisis that he had to endure through. Ponyboy has been gone from Darry, his older brother for about 6 days because they were hiding from the police after Johnny murdered a Soc. They ended up running into a burning church to save children from burning to death and after that they ended up in the hospital from their injuries. We can see this from:“ I was sitting in the waiting room, wait to hair how Darry and Johnny were. ”(Hinton 96). The story The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton has instances of character growth throughout the story. One person we see this major growth in is Ponyboy. People have the ability to change, how does Ponyboy do? At the start, Ponyboy has a very black and white way of seeing the gang, the Socs.
Before Johnny died, he killed an 18 year old boy attempting to drown Ponyboy in a fountain. The boys left late at night and went to the abandoned church at Jay Mountain to stay there for what ended up being a week. “I was scared stiff about Pony,” Darry told Hannah News, “I had no way of knowing if he’d come back or not.” The boys left the church to get some food and came back to three children in the church which was blazing with flames. Courageously, both of the boys jumped into the burning church rescuing all three children.
In the beginning of the book Ponyboy walked home without anybody from the movie theaters. He was jumped by the Socs and Darry yelled at him for not bringing someone with him and said that he doesn't use his head before he does stuff. Later in the Novel Darry talked to Ponyboy again about how everyone else is going to stay in the gang and in the hood. Darry said he should care more about school because he was the only one that had a chance to do something to do with his life and leave. The thing that helped Ponyboy overcome the trials of Johnny and Darry’s death was a note left by Johnny.
Ponyboy lived with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop after his parents were killed in a car accident. Ponyboy had some friends in the gang: Steve, Two-Bit, Dally but his best friend was a boy named Johnny who was considered the gang`s mascot. Ponyboy was a boy who always wanted to be tough but an accident that happened in the story might make him change of mind on what he wanted to be.
