Before Johnny died, he killed an 18 year old boy attempting to drown Ponyboy in a fountain. The boys left late at night and went to the abandoned church at Jay Mountain to stay there for what ended up being a week. “I was scared stiff about Pony,” Darry told Hannah News, “I had no way of knowing if he’d come back or not.” The boys left the church to get some food and came back to three children in the church which was blazing with flames. Courageously, both of the boys jumped into the burning church rescuing all three children. The children were unharmed, but not Ponyboy and Johnny. Both boys were quickly escorted to the hospital. Johnny lost his sense of feeling below his waist, broke his back, and had severe third degree burns in several places on his body. Ponyboy has recovered and Johnny passed away
