The social control theory (also known as the social bond theory) has a close tie to crime as it is a proposal that emphasizes what people take into consideration before breaking the law or becoming deviant. Some of these include commitments, relationships, values, norms and beliefs. Travis Hirshi developed this theory in the year 1969 as an effort to answer the question as to why people obey the law. However now that time has passed there has been a shift of what is socially normal from times prior to today. The results of the study showed that the descriptive norms and expectancies are positively associated to the consequences of marijuana use. However, the injunctive norms are negatively associated with consequences when the levels of both descriptive norms and expectations are elevated during a situation. Social class is a group of people with similar levels of wealth, influence, and status. Four common social classes informally recognized in many societies are upper class, middle class, working class, and the lower class. The higher the social class, thus the higher income level. Whether class is related to deviant labeling depends on the type of deviance involved. Basically, lower class teenagers are just as likely as their upper class peers to engage in victimless deviant acts such as drug use, drunkenness and truancy.
A form of social inequality that is happening today is based on people’s appearance. Judging others by the way they look is very common, considering all of the new fashion trends and people’s need to feel like they are just like everyone else. If someone opened a magazine, the first thing that they might see is a very expensive dress worn by a famous model or another type of fashion trend and when people see this, they think that it must be popular and they absolutely have to get it. A lot of people, who may not be able to afford clothing or have a different style of fashion that they like, get bullied every day by their clothing choices because it is not like everyone elses. A girl who wears faded shirts and torn jeans is seen as a poor, lonely outsider while a girl who wears the coolest designer clothes is seen as the popular girl who gets everyone’s attention.
A few summers ago some of my cousins, aunts, and uncles went on a road trip. We traveled to California, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado in the span a month. While all these states are in the same country, they all have different social norms. When we went to most places people new almost right away we were from the south. One lady told us she knew we were from the south, because of the jewelry we were wearing.
Social norms are rules that have been ingrained in society and people for hundreds of years. These societal rules can be anything from not talking to strangers on the subway to wearing weather appropriate clothes in public. Yet, when these societal norms are broken, the observers, as well as the person who destroyed the norm, are affected. Societal norms play in large role in how a person conducts him or herself when interacting with others. When deciding what social interaction, I would break, I wanted to do something that would be easy for me to fully commit to without facing too much embarrassment.
In our society exists another social norm, a code called, “Behavior Code”. Even at this moment, many idiosyncratic babies with different characteristics are born around the world. In their adolescence, however, many boys and girls question themselves whether their behaviors are in accordance with the behavior code. For instance, some girls grow into tomboys — “girls start wearing stylish clothes and watching from the sidelines as the boys acted and spoke” (Pipher, p1). But, unfortunately, at some points of their adolescence, those idiosyncratic girls lose thier authenticity and become a part of the society, behaving correspondingly to the behavior code.
Social influence theory refers to the change in behavior caused due the influence from one person to another. This change may happen intentionally or unintentionally depending on the relationship of the person with his surrounding people and the society as a whole. Social influence has three areas which are conformity, compliance and obedience. Conformity is where the change of behavior, values, and beliefs happens to fulfill the belonging and esteem needs and the approval of certain groups.
