Farm Team is a book, written by Will Weaver, about baseball and the life of young Billy Baggs. Billy is the main character, his mother Mavis and his father Abner are probably the two most prevalent characters other than Billy. In this novel, the Baggs family puts together a baseball team, called the farm team, that accepts anyone. In the beginning Billy Baggs started playing baseball for the town team. Earlier that month the car salesman, Randy Meyers, sold Billy’s mother a lemon, and Abner, Billy’s dad was furious. Later that week Abner picked Billy up from school and took a trip down to Randy Meyers A-1 car lot and demolished several of his cars. 136) that read, “Come one, come all…” Billy went to work on making a field, he made all the bases and then he decided to split the difference for the distance for the pitching mound between the major league baseball and little league. The next day a Mexican family showed up to the Baggs farm with three boys eager to play ball, Jesus (pronounced Haysoos), Raul, and Juan Elvis. Billy liked these guys because they were very good at baseball, because in Mexico they played ball year round. The Erickson girls also came out to play ball. They are definitely not Mavis’ favorites, she even warned Billy to stay away from them. Danny bowyer a very big very quiet kid from down the road also came. The next day a boy named Aaron Goldberg showed up, he is a city boy who likes the statistical aspect of baseball, he stayed and helped Billy do farm work. He was fascinated with the hay baler. the farm team agreed with coach Anderson on a game against the town team. The next day Aaron came over and he and Billy went to go scout out the talent on the town team. Billy left him at their practice saying he was going to see his father at the jail, but instead he took a trip down to the beach to see Suzy Langen, his crush. Billy saw Tim Loren at the beach too and negotiated a deal with him about the game. Billy agreed to throw him an easy pitch if he told him who all was coming to the game. Suzy Langen also came. To Billy’s surprise the sheriff came and brought Abner with him. They appointed the sheriff as the umpire for their game. The coach from another school even showed up s sort of a scout watching Billy. The game began, the farm team was leading 0-2 and it was the third inning, Billy’s rival King Kenwood, a tall and cocky town team player, hit a fly ball to center field and the center fielder tripped from a gopher hole, so the sheriff made Kenwood go back to third. Kenwood’s father made a seen so the sheriff handcuffed him and he screamed, “What! You can’t do this!” the sheriff replied with, I’m the umpire and the sheriff and I’ll do what I please. The center field was replaced with Billy’s dog Skinner. With two on base coach Anderson put in Tim Loren because he knew Billy promised him an easy pitch. As Billy promised he lobbed the ball straight down the middle and Tim clobbered the ball. Luckily the ball was caught by the farm teams k-9 center skinner. That was game the Farm team had won.
