This Dark Endeavour is by the award winning author, Kenneth Oppel. This speculative fiction book is about a young group of kids who go on an adventure in order to find a cure for their beloved ill friend Konrad. The main characters are Victor Frankenstein, his twin brother Konrad, their cousin Elizabeth, and their friend Henry. The book is written in Victor’s 1st person point of view. All is well throughout the story until Konrad gets terribly ill. They then must then go on a life threatening journey to try to save Konrad’s life. Victor is not effectively able to deal with conflict due to his main character traits: Jealous, arrogant, and deceitful. Describing Victor as the jealous type is simple. A prime example of this is, is when Victor, Elizabeth, Henry and Konrad were searching through the cave for an ingredient for the elixir and came upon a ledge that they had to jump off of. Everyone safely got down up to Elizabeth’s turn. She misplaces her jump and nearly breaks her knees if Victor wasn’t there. Elizabeth lands on top of Victor and Victor does not let Elizabeth get off him, “I held her tighter, I did not want to let go” (Oppel, 141). The fact that Konrad was there made matters worse; either way Victor did not care as his emotions took control of him. Another instance of when Victor shows off his arrogance, is when he stalks Elizabeth as she puts a note underneath a vase. He waits until she leaves the library then quickly pursues the note, “At the vase’s bottom was the note, it was not for me, but I scooped it out and slide it into my pocket” (Oppel, 141). This single act caused many more problems later on in the story all because Victor stuck his nose in somebody else’s property.
