Death is like an object lit on fire. Once the object has been swallowed by the flames, there is nothing left but ashes of the object, it is irreversible, evil. When one is to think about death, they promptly think of things like wicked, evil, and darkness. they wonder, how can it have the nerve to be so cruel. Some could furthermore wonder if in some world, if death could be taken into a conscious form, what would it have to say for itself? The book, “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, is not only written about the mass murder of millions of Jews, in addition, the book is from the perspective of no other than death itself. It displays what death feels with every soul he takes, seeing what goes through his mind with the job that is forced upon him. In the book, death ends the novel with “I am haunted by humans” (Zusak 550), the theme this quote allows the reader to infer is “there is a different side to every story”.

But that is simply not true. but of course humans find it challenging to understand his side. In the case for the death of Rudy Steiner, a loyal, sweet, and ambitious young boy, we hear about death’s thoughts on taking away his life. “ taking a boy like Rudy was robbery—so much life, so much to live for.” (Zusak 167) Again, the authors word choice using the word “ robbery” impeccably describes death's true feelings towards human life. This quote proves that death does not simply see humans as nothing, but he observes every soul. He takes into account what type of life they led and appreciates it before he takes it away.
