They then leave to take care of Vāli’s obliteration. On the way, they pass saptajana āśramam. Sugrīva takes Him to Kiṣkindā cave. Rāma asks Sugrīva to challenge Vāli to a duel so He can kill him. Sugrīva approaches the cave and tightening up his clothes, he hollers in a booming voice to Vāli to give him a fight. Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Āṅjaneya hide behind a tree. Vāli and Sugrīva fight with their fists with their full force. Rāma keeps watching. Both of them look so stunningly similar. He sat on Garuḍa who was not decorated with rope or bell or anything; Garuḍa’s speed was not enough for Him; with no prior program, Perumāḻ was dashing; so, Brahmā, Rudra and others follow Him thinking there was some danger or flood. Brahmā was directing his swan to fly faster and faster not being able to keep up with Garuḍa’s speed. He is sending Sugrīva with a garland to pin point him; will that garland withstand one blow? They do not stay when upanyāsam is done. Vāli’s one blow will destroy it. Will that identification last till the end? The secret is – Perumāḻ cannot kill Vāli and bestow the kingdom to Sugrīva just like that because Sugrīva has done bhāgavata apacāram. When a person has that blemish, Perumāḻ cannot bequeath kingdom or wealth. nivṛttimapi dharmamatti anagha tasya yan nigrahaḥ (Śrī Deśikan says in sañkalpa sūryodayam-3.32). Even though Āñjaneya warned Sugrīva to treat both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa reverentially, Sugrīva offered a seat with sāla tree branches solely for Rāma. He did not offer one for Iḻaiya perumāḻ. He exhibited this boorish behavior not once but twice. Āñjaneya watched this and offered a seat with sandalwood tree branches to Lakṣmaṇa. In order to absolve that sin, Rāma asks Lakṣmaṇa to garland
