Is/How is entertainment addictive? Can it serve the same purposes as drugs/alcohol? Are there similarities in the consequences of the addiction? Entertainment is addictive because TV shows leave you hanging so you want to watch the next episode. Also smartphones are the same way since you can talk to anyone on the internet without having to have visual contact but, that’s what Skype or facetime is for.
It is through this shortage of logical evidence and incoherence that Anderson disproves his own argument of “stupid games” (par.3) affecting society. By titling his article “Just One More Game” he implies, that gaming is compulsive. Yet he does not give any demographic, numerical or statistical evidence that gaming is making others compulsive. Nor does he show how it affects society, if that was even the case. In turn his argument is unconvincing to the reader.
Some people think that boredom is a serious problem astronaut in outer space. I, however, think that it shouldn’t be. I have two reasons for that statement. Firstly, astronauts should be busy because of ship maintenance or research about Mars before they arrive at their destination. Secondly, Space is one of the most interesting things in the universe, especially for space-lovers, like - of course – astronauts.
Nicholas Carr began by stating through personal experiences how surfing the web changes the way we process and receive information suggesting that Internet’s use chips away the capacity for concentration and contemplation. He then supported his claim by mentioning the hardships his friends are facing too. Unfortunately, providing personal opinions might not be valid in this case but rather null and void. In fact, he himself states that these are anecdotes and that further research and experiments are required to prove how Internet use negatively affects cognition. That said, a UCLA study in 2008 found that Internet searching may improve brain function and thus have a constructive impact on cognition.
Neal Gabler defines entertainment in his book Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality as a damaging power which is able to “ruin” society (Gabler, 1998). However, according to Longman Dictionary, entertainment refers to “things such as films, television, performances etc that are intended to amuse or interest people”; to be more objective, it “entails communication via external stimuli, which reaches a generally passive audience and gives some portion of that audience pleasure” (Bates & Ferri, 2010). The contradiction of these definitions shows that entertainment makes both negative and positive influences on society, so it is not entertainment itself, but the way how it is used by human beings has the capacity to “ruin” or improve

Eleanor Roosevelt once said “I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.” I consider curiosity to be what has made me the person I am today. Bombarding someone with questions should be my middle name. I always thought that being curious was a negative trait. Being “inquisitive” or ‘”entrometida” as my Colombian mother would say, was always something I had mixed feelings towards.
No two pieces of art are exactly the same. Each song, poem, short story and novel have different aspects to them which give them meaning and purpose in each. The writing styles, techniques and topics all contribute to make a structure for each different type literary story. In three different pieces of literature, which all have the word boring in their titles, are anything but boring.
Sam Anderson’s piece “In Defense of Distraction” was published into the New York Magazine in 2009. Anderson wanted to evoke from the readers a feeling of security that distraction can be a “trait” that does not have to be discouraged. Although many people perceive distraction as an impediment to progress and innovation, Anderson argues the contrary as he exemplifies how diversion from focus actually is a prerequisite for creativity. To demonstrate how distraction benefits growth, Anderson aims to convince his readers through his playful and sanguine, yet still an enlightening and informative tone for his reasoning behind his assertions by validating it through his word choice and scientific evidence. Distraction is a necessary “evil” for society to move forward and craft original and unique ideas for the future.
I get very distracted, I often have to stop whatever I’m doing and just day dream or I get lost in my phone. I also learned I shouldn't write multiple essays at once with the television on, that only blocks my creativity. The brain, like any other muscle, can get taxed due to multitasking switching between tasks and making multiple decisions might tire your brain to an expanse that a person might end up being a poor or less-effective decision maker. Multitasking can be a waste of time, and multitasking increases one stress levels, and anxiety.
Boredom is a bad thing for our brain. First of all, it can be destructive for our brain. It can also lead to anxiety which is not good for the people. Second, it can lead to making bad decisions because it messes up our brain. Last, some people that can’t cope with boredom, are more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs (Scholastic article, p.29).
Researchers propose the theory that the fascination people experience is attached to a subconscious calming sensation. The designers of the toy proclaim that this what the spinner does. Kids invent tricks using their fidget spinners, in an effort to amaze their friends, but are they being used as an excuse to just not focus on the immediate.
People think four hours of screen time is harmless to the brain development when in adolescent years.
