The Bosnia List is a memoir written by Kenan Trebincevic in collaboration with Susan Shapiro. The book is written to jump back and forth between the life of Kenan at age 9 in 1992 during the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, and his life in America at age 30 almost twenty years later. The description of his life in Bosnia shows the great suffering Kenan and his family went through as well as the suffering other Muslims in the area. When the Trebincevic’s eventually make it out of Bosnia, their life doesn’t turn around immediately. They still had to learn to assimilate into different cultures, and find ways to make enough money to survive while still facing controversy over their race and religion.

The Holocaust might be the most documented genocide but like all other genocides such as Bosnian and Bangladesh genocide, equally evil and heinous to the full max. The June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Serbian Black Hand Group, caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. As their allies got involved this conflict grew into World War I (WWI). This event wasn’t the real cause of the war, it was just the spark that started it. Most people would say the causes were imperialism, nationalism, alliances and militarism.
Genocide is the mass killing of people, usually for religious reasons, but now genocides happen mostly because no one can agree. An infamous example of one of the worst genocides was the killing of Bosnian-Muslims in Yugoslavia. After provinces like Slovenia and Croatia decided to secede from Serbia because of religious reasons, Serbia decided it was time to take action. After examining the political power, death rates, and the sole reason for the Yugoslavia murders, it is clear that the Serbian genocide is one of the worst in history. To begin with, I believe the assassination was one of the immediate causes for the World War breaking out in July 1914. Firstly, Bosnia was under control of the Austrian-Hungary Empire. However, the Serbs wanted to be free to live together in their own country and to be completely independent of the Austrian-Hungary Empire.
The quarrel afterwards with Bulgaria about dividing the won territories led to the Second Balkan War in 1913, won by Serbia. (Cannon; Wolfson & Laver) Serbian nationalism Serbian nationalism was ethnic nationalism. Their goal was the unity of Serbs and for Serbia to become the Piedmont of a new Southern-Slav state. The Serbs sought independence and freedom of foreign control and influence. Many factors powered the nationalistic feelings of the Serbs, including the Turkish control, pan-Slavism, the Bosnian Crisis and the Balkan Wars.
There were an estimated 200,000 people who were killed between 1992-1995 in a genocide commited by the Serbs against the Muslims, and Croats in Bosnia. On top of this, another 2 million Bosnians were displaced from their homes and placed in dangerous environments. Three main groups fought each other within the country, Bosnian Muslims, Serbs, and also the Croats. This was a horrible and important genocide that killed thousands of people between 1992-1995. Like the Nazi’s cleansing Europe of it’s Jews, the Serbs aim was the ethnic cleansing of any Muslims or Croatian presence in Serbian territory.
The Bosnian War lasted from 1992 until 1995, and has been concluded after the US engagement during the presidency of Bill Clinton. The Clinton administration, led by the ambassador Richard Holbrook, successfully stopped a further bloodshed and secured an overall peace in the Former Yugoslavia with the Dayton Peace Agreement. Many books and the journal articles have been written about the causes and who is responsible for the war taking many different aspects in their analysis (i.e., with a full right due to various theoretical approaches and the level of analysis). Due to its complexity, it seems that the best way to explain it is through its legal aspects.
The Balkan Wars were two wars that are considered minor in history, but have had more of an impact on the world than people think. The International Encyclopedia of the First World War describes the Balkan Wars as “two sharp conflicts that heralded the onset of World War I”. (Hall) The first began on October 8, 1912 when Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire. Then, the other members of the Balkan League, which included Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia, joined the war to help Montenegro.
