The Actual cause of World War 1 People ask what was the cause of WW1? There are the general assumptions but lets dig a bit deeper and find the true underlying causes of WW1. You can't fully understand the war without knowing how both sides were affected. The Triple Entente lost around 6 million soldiers while Germany and Austria-Hungary lost around 4 million just in troops. The war started when the Archduke of Austria was assassinated by Serbian assassins. Germany being allies with Austria felt it was time to declare war on Serbia. You see the Triple Entente had 17,180,000 sq.miles of imperialized land while Germany and Austria-Hungary had only 1,390,000 sq.miles of land (Document F). So you could say that the jealousy factor kicks in and Germany wants more imperialized land. There is opportunity for you to grow your economy and for you to get resources that you need that you no longer have to pay for. The Germans also felt that the English were “ the blood suckers of the world” (Document E). This was brought forth to the German people by a German propaganda cartoon that was drawn up in 1917 (Document E). The Germans saw the increasing growth of imperialized land controlled by The Triple Entente and saw it as another threat and they felt this way because The Triple Entente was already allies they controlled a lot more parts of the world than Germany and built up their armies and navies a lot more than Germany did. So the Germans had good reasons to feel threatened. They could’ve felt this way because as it is already the Germans were surrounded by The Triple Entente and because the allies had more land they would have better access to the things that they would need.
