For this essay I have chosen to write about the music in the scene after the death of Cedric when Harry and Cedric return from the graveyard in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
There are two pieces of music in this scene. One is a celebratory tune, as the background characters haven’t yet realised that Cedric has been killed. The other is a much slower piece played by strings.
The brass band music is an upbeat piece played by a brass band to reflect the situation that, according to the other characters, is happy.
The music is diegetic because the brass band is situated in the centre of all of the background characters in the scene. This means that both the characters and the audience can hear the music.
At first, the music is heard because it is one of the first sounds that the audience hears. It is also fairly loud and there is no dialogue to attract the audience’s attention. However, as soon as the characters begin speaking, the music becomes unheard, because it is no longer in the foreground of the sounds that the audience hear. Also, the music slowly fades out, which further helps the listeners to not notice the music. The other sounds that the scene begins with are the cheering from the background characters. This contrasts with the dialogue and the true mood of the scene.

In the second piece of music, the melody is played by the high strings, before moving to lower strings, and weaving between the two sections of the
