Kiley Banks Dr. Maureen Oakley Freshman Symposium Section B 29 September 2016 Loss of Identity In Brave New World we learn that the society in which the story takes place is built upon three things: “Community, Identity, Stability." These three things are ironic to have this society built upon. The way these three things are viewed is very different than in today’s society. At times it seems as though there is no community, identity or stability. So one might wonder how society can be built upon three things that don’t actually exist in the world state? It is a group of different people coming together; yet the community within Brave New World, people are made to be a certain way, there is nothing unique or different about each person. Everyone was created and programmed to fit into the five social castes: Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons, with very few differences between each. Most everyone is created to be identical or at least very similar. The Oxford Dictionary defines identity as “the fact of being who or what a person or thing is” (“identity”). Identity is an individual’s own characteristic and personality, yet within the society in Brave New World there is no individuality or identity. They aren’t designed to be their own person. Stability as defined by Oxford Dictionary is “the state of being stable, not changing” (“stability”). This society is seen as being stable because everyone is the same, there is no individual personalities, you know what to expect from everyone because everyone is the same. This society is seen as stable yet unstable at the same time. There are no individual ideas, beliefs, or freedoms; there can’t be stability because of this. Soma kept people from feeling stress and having negative feelings which are a normal part of life. The feelings of pain, stress, sadness, disappointment are what make us human. This shows the lack of humanity in this world. This society encourages them to turn to soma for all their problems.
