The Odyssey is an Epic Poem written by Homer. The main character is named Odysseus, who is the king of Ithaca. Odysseus first sets off to go help fight in the Trojan War to return the queen of Sparta, Helen. On his way home, he gets thrown off track and for seven of the ten years he has been wandering, he has been held captive on Calypso’s Island. During the Odyssey, many things are explained to help form the poem. For example, bravery, the hero’s journey, archetypes, and literary conflicts. Also, the movie O’ Brother Where Art Thou, can help us understand the Odyssey.

During the Odyssey, Odysseus faces many challenges like; the cyclopes and the sirens. When Odysseus faces the Cyclopes, he and his crew get trapped inside the cyclopes cave with a big bolder, with no way of getting out until it is moved. So, Odysseus figured out a plan to get him and the rest of his crew out of the cave. After the plan had failed and the cyclopes found them, Odysseus and some of his crew grasped a big pike and stabbed the cyclopes in the eye to kill him. Another challenge Odysseus faces is the sirens. In the Odyssey there are three different types of sirens. The first type is called the Sirens; they are half bird, half human. Another type is called Scylla; she has 12 legs, and they look like tentacles, has six heads, and triple serried rows of fangs. The last type is called Charybdis; she is a whirlpool who lurks to swallow the dark sea tide. The Sirens will lure you into your death with their soft soothing voices. To avoid dying, Odyssey has his crew tie him to the mast poll and put beeswax in his ears to stay away from the
