Breakaway Bases Softball and Baseball are lesser on the scale of injuries during sports. This is because adjustments are always being made to the way the sports are played so they are safer for the players. Many of the injuries that do happen in these sports, however, are from sliding into bases wrong. When sliding, one throws themselves to the ground in an attempt to get under a tag. While doing this, many people have hurt their ankles, legs, or joints by jamming their feet into non-moving bases. Makers of bases have taken this into account and have come out with a better idea. They have created ‘Breakaway Bases’ that have reduced injuries by tenfold. When a player slides into one of these bases, it is designed so that too much force causes the base to pop out of its, well, base. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, most injuries from sliding take the form of ankle sprains ranging from mild to severe and knee derangements such as ACL tears, which are usually season ending, and meniscal tears, which are only slightly better. More than 110,000 children only ages 5-14 playing baseball and softball annually get sports injuries, with most of these being sprains or tears. That’s more than hockey and soccer combined, which are both contact sports. These bases are made by Rogers, and they supply most, if not all USSSA tournament fields, USSSA being the association who organizes most softball and baseball events and tournaments. Made from rubber, these bases have different styles for different levels of play. Some, for collegiate level and onward, are very tough and don’t have a lot of give.
