Brent Staples Expository Strategies

In my narrative essay I used multiple expository strategies. First, I used the definition strategy because throughout the essay I sort of explained what waitressing is. There was no actual definition in the essay but there were sentences that explained the concept. For example “she introduced herself, joked with the customers, talked about the menu, and took their order.” Also, I believe I used the process analysis strategy as well. There were multiple paragraphs that explained step by step what my coworker did when she had a table of guests and what I did when I had a table of guests. It was a brief use of the strategy. Staples describes what his first encounter with someone who was afraid of him was like. He states that he was shocked and embarrassed that someone would think he could be capable of doing wrong when he couldn’t even hurt an animal. Staples goes on to describe the first year he was away from home, stating that he became acquainted with the actions that the color of his skin caused, although it was never pleasant to him. He explains that most of the people that are afraid of him are women. Staples acknowledges that he can’t so much as blame them because he is aware of the violence toward women. He still doesn’t think it’s a good enough reason to act the way they do. He writes of his life in Pennsylvania and the dangers he experienced growing up. Staples even experienced some of these discriminations in his work place, when he was a journalist in Chicago. Other black males in that industry had similar experiences. Staples includes one of those experiences and shows other people’s point of view. He clarifies what he usually does to keep the people around him at ease. He gives examples of how he has to act in order to go on about his day without causing anyone to be afraid of him, for example whistling a popular and classical
