Brian’s Hunt
As you begin to read this story it tells about a kid named Brian, he has set out by himself to spend time in the wilderness. It tells the reader that he has plans to set out and stay by himself and has promised to work on some school work that he'll be tested on when he gets back to his home in the city. Brian is sixteen years of age and could have been a school drop out of his school at this point but has discovered he loves to learn. He no longer is satisfied with simply memorizing facts in order to pass a test but now really wants to learn. Brians life was changed when he was only fourteen when he was on his way to visit his father when things took a turn for the worse. One night he is on the river banks and gets in his canoe and pushes out to eat his food away from the bugs on the water when he hears a noise that sounds like a dog. When he realizes it is a dog he goes and finds the dog and it is injured. He sews the wound up on the dog trying to figure out what might have caused this. When he is done fixing up this dog’s wound the dog becomes attached to him. When Brian sets out down the river the dog joins him in the front of the canoe. At Brian’s next stop he kills a doe to feed himself and a wild rabbit for the dog to feast on. Brian was still trying to figure where the dog came from and what happened to it. He rushes to his Cree friends Anne and David to find out they have been mauled by a bear. He couldn’t find their three kids and traces the evidence of the bear but instead of finding the bear he finds Anne and David’s oldest daughter in a canoe on the other side of the island in fear. He yells “Susan!” This gets her attention and he goes to her and she asks who he is and he says “It’s me, Brian….You don't know me but i spent time with your family.” (Paulsen
