Reaction Paper Amy C. Steinbugler the author of Beyond Loving, examines interracial intimacy in the beginning of the twenty-first century and it has continued to developed new ideologies. Segregation, slavery, court cases, black lives matter and many other historical movements occurred decades ago and people were not allowed to form a relationship outside of their race, because of biracial which was looked upon as wrong. It became a phase of racial denials in which interracial relationships are seen as symbols of racial progress. This book examines the racial dynamics of everyday life of lesbian, gay heterosexual of black and white couples. Overall, this book analyzes cotemporary interracial through “racework”.
Anne Fadiman’s professional background is that of the Hmong lifestyle with its cultures against the entire American culture. In his background, there is miscommunication resulting from the refusal of the give medical dosages and other medicines due to the misunderstandings and mistrust. According to Barnsteiner , (p.71), there is also the inability of the US doctors to treat those people deeply rooted in the Hmong culture and they are also unable to learn that culture in the most helpful. Hmong is a refugee family in the US and that is where Ann Fadiman comes from. They come from provinces such as Laos and Sainyabuli which have tried to interact with the healthcare system in California and Merced.
All But My Life is a memoir written by Gerda Weissmann Klein. This memoir tells about her experiences during World War Two. Her childhood was full of happiness growing up with her Jewish family. This memoir starts two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland.
One of the recurring themes of Anne Fadiman’s novel The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is the cultural unawareness that is present, not only the American perspective, but the Hmong perspective as well. This is evident in the recountment of a Hmong American that returns to visit Ban Vinai, a refugee camp in Thailand, after establishing herself in the United States. Most of the book is written with a focus on the Western doctors lacking understanding of Hmong language, customs and culture which in turn made it difficult for them to treat patients such as Lia. They struggled to explain procedures, while practical to them, appeared harmful and life-threating to the Hmong.
The memoir, Handbook for an Unpredictable Life by Rosie Perez, talks about how Lydia robbed a store. Lydia abuses her gun rights and she just using the pistol for fun. Lydia steal for fun and Rosie knew stealing was wrong. Rosie found out about her mother’s illness schizophrenia because Lydia always speak out her mind. Lydia is a open book.
Maturing in life. At the beginning of life, people are innocent, with life not having a chance to tamper and corrupt them. At the end of life, they 've known loss and heartbreak and life has messed them up. But imagine if people were born all knowing and died as innocent as a baby.
The author of “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?” Mark Edmundson, is a distinguished English professor at the University of Virginia. Professor Edmundson received a B.A from Bennington College in 1974, then in 1985, earned his Ph.D. from Yale University (possibly from the department of English). This article focuses on how a typical university functions from the administration, to the professors and most importantly the students. Edmundson goes on even further to question what the student thinks she knows about education and gives his own philosophical take on it.
In Anne Moody’s autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, she discusses the hardships that “negroes” faced during a time when segregation was prevalent. Anne Moody, or Essie Mae, as she was often referred to in the book, was a black rights activist. Certain events lead her to be such a strong advocate for African Americans. Her first memory of being separated from white people was at the movie theatre. Children were the last to see color, so they did not realize how sternly the segregation was enforced.
Coming of Age in the Civil Rights Movement Despite slavery coming to an end in the mid 1800’s, African Americans struggled to live a truly free life. Even in the 20th century, poverty proved to be an inescapable burden that kept them stuck on the lowest levels of society. Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody is an autobiography about the struggle of growing up on a plantation in rural Mississippi during the Civil Rights era. Sharecropping played an extensive role at keeping former slaves in poverty. Sharecropping dominated the South, but this type of job inequality was widespread throughout the entire country, making it near impossible to obtain a respectable job, even branding a college degree.
Anne Moody wrote the autobiography Coming of Age in Mississippi where it begins in 1944 highlighting the struggles of her childhood as it progresses to her adult life in 1964. Moody sought a different path than the rest of her family which led her to be apart of the civil right movement that occurred. Coming of age in Mississippi starts by introducing the narrator of the story, Essie Mae. She discusses her childhood where her father left their family for another woman, and her mother struggles providing for her family. Essie Mae had a traumatic experience in her time on the plantation to where in her adult life she was “still haunted by dreams of the time we lived on Mr.Carter’s plantation.”

The Holocaust was not committed by a typical villain but by regular people. Adolf Hitler planted the seeds, but his supporters nourished and harvested them. Each person had their own motive for turning a blind eye to this act of genocide, but overall it followed a theme.

The Renaissance was a beautiful period, with beautiful pieces of artwork to the beautiful melodies in songs, the Renaissance is truly a time to remember. Many famous pieces of work and their artists came from this period, artists such as Michelangelo, van Eyck and da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci is most famous for his piece called the Mona Lisa. Art is filled with diversity and different opinions, but how did da Vinci’s artwork influence the Renaissance period? The Renaissance period was from 1400 to 1600 BCE and was a very creative time in history.
In this event, Howard is looking upon the farm-scene that he has been away from for so long with its “endless drudgeries.” With this, all of the joy of Howard’s homecoming disappeared. Among this farm-scene was Howard’s farmer brother, Grant, who was angry at Howard for his elegant clothes and clean hands.
