Soldier Boys was written by Dean Hughes. The book was published in 2001. The setting starts off with a couple of young boys who want to sign up for the war but their to young to sign up on their own so they have to have their parents permission to sign up. The book goes back an d forth between the americans and the germans because the book talks about both sides of the war. The book is fiction.
From the German side a soldier named Dieter Hedrick couldn’t wait to sign up but he didn’t want his father to know. He needed his father to sign the papers so he could go and do his part in the war. Dieter has known his father to be brave in some situations but in war his father was known as a cowardly savage. Dieter didn’t want to be a coward like his father. He wants to do his part in the war and to contribute his service to the army. Spence Morgan from the american side wanted to join the army ever since his brother joined. Spence wanted to do his part in the war and contribute his life to the army. He wanted to become a worthy man of his country. Spence was bullied at his school when he was about thirteen or fourteen because he was the nerd of the school. He eventually got into the army and he met a new friend named Ted. Ted was thinking about quitting after about two or three days into training but spence wouldn’t let him, he said that they made it this far and they can go even farther if they try and get going. Spence got to see some combat and action. It wasn’t what he thought it was going to be. It was more than what he expected, more blood and people crying out for medics and the pain they were in made him feel sick. He wanted to help
