Everything will be okay Has something really bad happened to you, but a great life lesson has come out of it? Well, that’s exactly what happened to James, in the story “Everything will be Okay” by James Howe. All James wanted was to have a pet of his own, and for his dad and brother to be proud of him. In the end, James taught us that it is better to be yourself, and make your own choices. In the beginning of the story, James was already being himself and making his own choices. First of all, he choose not to eat the venison that everybody else was eating, because he was disgusted by it, he even said the thought of it made his want to throw up. Secondly, James has his mind set on working for Dr. Milk just because his older brother Paul, which he admires, works for him, which shows that he is not making his own choices, even though he should be. For example when James said to the kitten that he named Smokey, “I won’t let anything bad happen to you,” “I don’t care how sick you are. My big brother will take you to Dr. Milk’s and give you shots, and medicine and stuff you’ll see.” this quote shows that he is making his own choice to have hope, and that he is being himself, and not what his dad or brother wants him to be. More importantly, he just really wanted something to care for, because also in the middle of the story James’s dad got a beagle puppy to replace their old one that had died, and his dad said that the puppy could be James’s, but later on he realized that the puppy was not his and that it was just a hunting dog. That would be very hard for me if my dad promised me that I could have a dog, but then for him to not keep that promise.
