The author Richard Connell shows us the insanity of humanity through this short story. When Rainsford first figures out that General Zarroff is hunting human beings, he is in total shock. I believe that the message Connell is trying to dispatch is the behavior of one when stuck in a life or death situation. He is trying to show the readers how if one’s life is threatened, they generally choose to forget their values so they can survive, like Rainsford. It is in human nature to do everything possible to stay alive and be afraid enough of death to lose one’s conscience.
