Broca's Igm Analysis

517 Words3 Pages

Broca’s work primarily focused on figuring out what qualities of a person determined the size of their brain and thus their intelligence. By measuring the size and weight of the brains of recently passed white European male university professors and comparing them to the those of women and black men, Broca developed the paradigm that size and weight of the brain directly correlated with the intelligence of the brain’s owner. This paradigm would have been incredibly successful at the time due to its high favorability towards white European males who were very much target audience of the research. It also facilitated lots of research due to the falsifiability of the paradigm. As a result of Broca’s paradigm one scientist performed an experiment on 119 criminals, still seeking to refute Broca even after he had passed away. The truthfulness of the paradigm was important to the white European males in power as it solidified their rule as just, …show more content…

Gratiolet first challenged Broca’s paradigm by claiming that German brains were heavier than French brains on average by approximately 100 grams. Under Broca’s paradigm this should not be true, as all white European males should offer no great statistical differences of that magnitude from one another. After consulting the data, Broca dispelled the anomaly observing that French brains were on average slightly heavier than German brains. Later Broca was challenged again regarding the equally large brains of criminals to the University scholars. From this, Broca was able to shift his paradigm to include the exceptional criminals who have mastered their craft as a university professor does theirs; for every Sherlock requires a Moriarty. Instead of facing a crisis and having his paradigm completely shattered, Broca was able to alter it slightly to allow the newly discovered information to be implemented and
