Essay: Compare and contrast the image of the American West in the cigarette ad and the excerpt from Brokeback Mountain.

These two texts have similar themes but they have some contrasting points and purposes, there are some main differences and the type of information is given in diverse ways to readers. The common theme is American west, but seen from different perspectives.

The first text is a Marlboro advertisement from 1970, it represents American west cowboys catching wild horses and smoking cigarettes. The audience are American smokers, who should prefer Marlboro over other brands; this advertisement has a persuasive intention, the image portrays cowboys as the real and true men, submitting wild horses with an aggressive attitude.

The second text is an extract from the short story “Brokeback Mountain” by Annie Proulx, it tells about a couple of farmers in the American west bringing their herd up to the mountains, it is a story so the purpose is to involve readers and make them able to imagine the situation, the language is specific to the breeders’ field, there is a great number of adjectives that describe thoroughly the events; the author knows the western context and makes it clear. …show more content…

The second piece has a light and daily tone, the farmers do their job and they appreciate their animals, for they earn a living thanks to them; they have pets, such as dogs, and enjoy nature while staying in the mountains, horses are seen in the story as reliable animals which help the farmers with their
