A Texan’s culture and traditions had changed during the Civil War and its reconstruction. Holidays, traditions, and celebrations were all modified thanks to the war that has brought our nation to what it is today. Some examples of these traditions include the Yellow Rose of Texas, Texas Christmas, and Juneteenth. The Yellow Rose of Texas
“I’ve lived the literal meaning of the ‘land of the free’ and ‘home of the brave.’ It’s not corny for me. I feel it in my heart. I feel it in my chest. Even at a ball game, when someone talks during the anthem or doesn’t take off his hat, it pisses me off.
Neil Diamond’s song “Coming to America” shows that us Americans are not stubborn, have freedom, and doesn't mind having new people coming to America. I think the song was a nice song about the inflow of immigrants coming to America. Just like Neil, I’m also excited about them wanting to come and live the great American dream. “ Everywhere around the world, They're coming to America, Every time that flag’s unfurled, They're coming to America,” Neil stated in his song. Unfortunately, the American dream is a dream that everyone would love to have.

The lyrics are full of double entendres and metaphorical language, referencing a man who is a "hound dog" who has been cheating and lying to her. Thornton's version of the song is characteristic of the rhythm & blues genre, which emerged in the 1940s and 1950s and featured soulful vocals, a focus on the blues, and a strong rhythm section.

In Langston Hughes’s poetry, “Let America Be America Again”, he explain patriotism from his perspective. “The land that’s mine--the poor man’s, Indian’s Negro’s, ME who made America, whose sweat and blood, whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, must bring back our mighty dream again.” Some examples of being patriotic for me is standing up for the flag, voting, having belief in a religion. America is very special to my family and to myself, I can be Hispanic, Irish, Asian, Italian, African American, British and still be an American. Being an American is the greatest opportunity in the world and I wouldn't change it.
In the short story America and I, the author Anzia Yezierska writes about a Russian girl that comes to America to have a chance to be successful. The Russian immigrant and many other immigrants who migrate over to America believe that it is the land of opportunity, where dreams become reality. She came to America to pursue the so called American dream, her dream was to be able to do the things she was not able to do in Russia, and to take advantage of opportunities that her family members were not offered. Yezierska has the Russian immigrant say that, “America was a land of living hope, woven dreams, aflame with longing and desires.”
America is a “land of living hope, woven of dreams, aflame with longing and desire” people who come to America come here to get a better life or career. Most people who come to America for a few years think they are Americans because they wave a flag, but they don't know the true meaning of what it means to be and American. An American is someone who will die for it’s country, someone who emigrated here for more opportunities, and someone who is encouraged by the history of America. In “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty”, by John Sidney McCain he Defines his own personal interpretation of what an American is.
The fact that you will be judged on every little detail may cause you to rethink if being an american is all it 's said to be. In the poem “ America “ by Claude McKay she says “I love this cultured hell that tests my youth! Her vigor flows like tides into my blood, Giving me strength erect against her hate.” (p14) This quote is a prime example of how being an American is bittersweet.
The line “They drove me out of the forest. They took away my jungles.” shows that the white men had taken them away from their comfort zone, their families, and their possessions. There was also the line. “Now I herd with many-
The slow pace of the song educes a spirit of change while remembering what made America great. Further appeals to pathos included the repetition of “its morning again in America,” the visual elements of working, buying houses, and getting married and portrayal of firefighters raising the American flag. These visuals evoke a vision of a past America and of the revival of the country with Reagan as President. The economy had changed for the better during Reagan’s first term and he used this to reiterate a flourishing
The Irony of “Born in the U.S.A.” As the fireworks explode in the night sky to celebrate Independence Day, “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen plays loudly for the audience to hear. As the men, women, and children bellow out the chorus proudly, they never seem to grasp its intended meaning. By studying the appeals and irony used in Springsteen’s lyrics, it is easy to see how Springsteen’s message of the poor treatment of Vietnam War veterans is misconstrued by millions of listeners into American pride. Springsteen’s intended audience is a group made up of mainly white, blue collar Americans-
There have been many protest songs in the United States; the freedom of speech has contributed to powerful music and protest words that are written in song. The song that will be discussed throughout this essay is “American Idiot” by Green day. This song speaks volume about the uneducated “America” and puts emphasis on the destruction that reality television is making on the United States of America. Listening to the unspoken word and read between the lies, for that then you will understand. The song “American Idiot” was released during the 2004 presidential election, where George W. Bush was selected into office for the second term as President of the United States of America (source).
