After the Brutal murder of the "dictator" of Rome a formal burial in remembrance was made. The group of conspirators and a few others try and band together to make speeches to give at the ceremony. The conspirators all think that Mark Anthony is going to give a very controversial speech that is going to end in an all-out brawl to lead to anarchy. On the other hand, Brutus doesn't think that Mark Anthony is capable of such a thing so he only prepares a speech that is short, concise, and authoritative. He did not expect Anthony to pull out a huge well thought out speech that would lead to a blood bath.
Rhetoric in the Speeches of Brutus and Antony The death of Caesar is a controversial topic and was even more controversial at the time of his funeral when when senators were trying to benefit from his death by getting the Roman citizens on their side. Out of the two speeches, Marc Antony’s speech was more effective because of his use of appeals and biases, being 100% true and had a larger variety of rhetorical devices.

In his thoughtful and critical speech, Brutus, a senator of Rome who is friends with Caesar, utilizes rhetorical devices in order to persuade himself that killing Caesar is beneficial to the people. Toward the middle of the speech, Brutus uses Pathos in a metaphor to prove to himself “that lowliness is young ambition’s ladder” that but once one reaches the top of the ladder, he will “[scorn] the base degrees by which he did ascend” (II, i, 22 & 26-27). This metaphor is comparing humility to a ladder in which ambitious people use to climb to achieve great power. Although, once one reaches the power, the ladder is no longer any use for them and they will look down on the steps and people that had helped them get to this place in scornfulness.
Marc Antony gives his speech at Caesar’s funeral to the citizens of Rome. The purpose of his speech is to prove to the citizens that Brutus is wrong and Caesar shouldn’t have been killed. The tone of his speech is very ironic. It also gets very dramatic as he talks about Caesar being killed.

However, Brutus continually feels the need to defend his actions and justify his crime. If he is truly confident in his deed, he would not stammer to find justifications. Yet, Brutus may not want power, he may really want justice. In his mind, murdering Caesar, was the only route to go.
When Brutus was talking to the conspirators Brutus was going back and forth think if he should help the conspirators kill Julius Caesar. He was going back and forth because he was thinking of the power he could have and could rule Rome. The reason behind Brutus killing Caesar was for the better of Rome. If Brutus would not have killed Caesar, Rome would have turned into a dictatorship, and in turn it would have ruined Rome and all of its people. Brutus did not kill Julius just for the power to rule Rome, he killed Julius to save Rome from Caesar’s dictatorship.
When Brutus spoke about his motives to kill Caesar he said, “As he was valiant I / honor him. But, as he was ambitious, I slew him.” (3.2.27-28). Brutus honored Caesar but saw that his ambition has the potential of being very dangerous. He thought that a danger like Caesar could not be left to grow more powerful when there is a solution to the issue now.

Cassius influenced Brutus to conspire against Caesar by stating, Caesar “is now become a god… and his name has been sounded more than [Brutus’s]” (Act 1, Scene 2, Line 118-145-6). Cassius’s arguments convinced Brutus in proving Caesar's murder would be just, but Caesar’s death is unjust because he is being murdered out of Brutus and Cassius’s jealousy. Both of the individuals are envious of the power that Caesar is being given by the people of Rome and want to end his life before they will lose their own power in the senate after Caesar becomes king. Brutus delivers his speech in a laudatory manner by conveying Caesar’s deeds and claiming he was ambitious, although Antony contradicts Brutus’ claims and says Caesar spurned the crown with the intent to merely rule as a de facto dictator. Brutus’ speech reveals his motives were truly for the benefit of Rome given his nationalistic tone and Antony’s speech was merely used to obscure his true motives, which was to embroil Rome in a series of civil wars to attain power. Brutus and Antony’s speeches consisted predominantly of Pathos and Ethos, but it is Antony who ultimately it is Antony who prevails because of his almost disingenuous attitude and even use of Logos which is seen when claims that reading Caesar’s will would dishonor his compeers and even Caesar
