Helman examines how the sound system of Spanish may influence the pronunciations and, in turn, the beginning writing behaviors of English language learners who come from different backgrounds. It talks about the ways that Spanish speakers may have difficult time with certain ways of writing and reading the English. Each part of the English language has it certain difference ways for Spanish speakers for example, when a word in English starts with a S but the Spanish speaker will write a e in the front since they would pronounce a E when trying to pronounce. The caught my attention in this article was how the Spanish speakers will do what is necessary to learn English but the English language has it very specific rules and ways of pronounce certain letters different ways making it more difficult for them to learn for example caught (cot) the Spanish speaker would sound it out and only be able to get 3 letters from them sounding it out. This article has a lot of things that we have read and discussing in classroom from one of those is the way to pronounce and how the sounds come from different parts of out mouth. Decoding and encoding is one of the biggest parts for the Spanish speakers to do according to the article “ a sound that is not present in one’s native language will likely be difficult to hear and in turn, produce”(Helman, 454). While reading this article and being in my placement for the last couple of week I have been able to actually use the examples they have shown on here with one of my students. He is a Spanish speaker that had to learn Spanish before learning English so he has difficulty with Spanish and now learning English. I have worked with him one on one in the last couple of week and have should him how ch- in English doesn’t make the ch sound but more of a k sound when sounding it out like on Christmas. This article has taught me many types of ways that I will be able to teach those students on how they need to pronounce, read and write so they will be able to achieve in all the content areas they are required to.
