“Who cares what you believe Fatty” (Golding 90). Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. There are various methods of bullying that exists on the island in William Golding’s bestselling story Lord of the Flies. There are four types of bullying that has been identified in the world, however there are only three types that is mentioned in this article. These three types of bullying are verbal bullying, physical bullying, and lastly social bullying.
To begin with, verbal bullying is writing or using your words to bully someone. Verbal bullying is used throughout the book. An example is when Ralph told everyone Piggy’s name, even though Piggy specifically asked him not to. Not only is Piggy’s name made fun of and taunted, but so is Piggy. Piggy was a very intelligent character, but because of his physical features and inability to do hard work he is made fun of. One thing they could have done to stop this verbal bullying is to stand up to one another and have each other’s back. No one has stood up to the bullies and they let the verbal taunting continue which makes things escalate to physical contact. The boys start to push and shove each other and one goes as far as throwing rocks at a little boy. An example of physical bullying is when Jack broke Piggy’s glasses. Towards the end of the story they take the physical bullying too far and one boy, Rodger, pushes a boulder off a cliff sending Piggy to his death.
