Authenticity is commonly what we call “real” in life. However, the definition of authenticity has infinite possibility depending on the person’s thinking process, especially their setting and environment. In today’s society, the meaning of authentic life is mostly focused on technology as well as the development of it, which is unlike the authenticity of other generations. Through two essays, “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli” and “Alone Together”, the question can be answered of how we can live an “authentic” live with the existence of technology. The two authors of these two essays have shown us the power of technology; how it affects our lives in authenticity and busyness. The society may seem like it is getting consumed by the use of technology, but the positive outcomes people get from the use of technology today overpowers the suspiciousness we have of the negative outcomes. Authenticity is explained by Sherry Turkle, a sociologist and a psychologist, in her essay “Alone Together” that it consists of real intimacy, real experience, and real conversation. However, due to the high usage of technology today, those three key factors about authenticity are not always fulfilled. Turkle gives a story about the time she went to the zoo with her daughter, where she realized the difference in authenticity between the age gap. Turkle’s tone shows that she is skeptical about the definition of authenticity in those children’s minds; she becomes concerned with the fact that everybody does not essentially have the “ideal”
